Challenge

A call for a more efficient and patient-centric healthcare system

Denmark’s healthcare system faces growing pressure – rising demand, stretched hospital capacity, and the need to care for patients without compromising safety or personal attention. The challenge was clear: How do you deliver high-quality healthcare remotely, in a way that’s easy to use for everyone – especially older patients – and scalable for an entire nation?

Solution

An ecosystem for patients and healthcare professionals

We designed and developed Telma, a simple yet powerful digital ecosystem for patients and healthcare staff.

  • For patients: A an app – tablet and mobile – with large text, clear buttons, and high contrast, making it accessible for users of all ages and abilities. Patients measure and track their health, receive reminders, and communicate with care teams through messaging or video calls.
  • For healthcare professionals: A streamlined application that highlights changes in patient health, prioritizes who needs attention first, and enables one nurse to follow up to 50 patients efficiently.

Training and onboarding were built into the experience, ensuring every patient could start confidently, even if they’d never used a tablet before.

From the very first pilot, Telma showed its potential to transform care:

11% reduction in hospital admissions for COPD patients
20% shorter hospital stays for those admitted
62% of patients felt more in control of their condition
72% felt safer and better at managing their illness

Our Process

Dual-track agile approach

We developed Telma using a human-centered, dual-track agile process that kept patients and healthcare professionals involved from day one. Through workshops, interviews, and usability testing, we uncovered both practical requirements and the everyday challenges of managing care remotely.

While our design team refined concepts and validated them with users, our developers worked in short, focused sprints – allowing us to deliver features quickly and act on feedback without losing quality.

Accessibility and compliance were built in from the start, with large touch areas, high-contrast visuals, and plain language ensuring the platform is easy to use for everyone, including those with little technical experience.

Scaling Telemedicine Across Denmark

Following a successful launch with patients in Region Nord, Telma is now being scaled nationwide and on the way to include more diagnoses.

As the platform expands, the focus has been on streamlining patient administration, including updates to care plans, support for patients who relocate or are temporarily hospitalized, and more.

At the same time, we’re continuously enhancing the product based on feedback gathered from a nationwide user forum, ensuring ongoing improvements to meet future needs.
